Saturday schedule and heat sheets

The penultimate day of the Olympics is here, and it’s the last day on the track… Tomorrow morning the marathon wraps everything up, but today there are still big US medals in play…

The most intriguing story line the men’s 5000m where 10K gold medalist Mo Farah and silver medalist Galen Rupp go up against  a ton of east Africans… But Bernard Lagat is also going to be running and it’s his last chance at Olympic gold… Arguably the best American distance runner in history, Lagat had World Championship gold but feels like his career is incomplete without a gold medal around his neck…

The US women have won 11 individual medals, the second-most in history only behind the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles where they won 14… There’s a chance they could tie that number if everything goes right as Caunte Lowe and Brigetta Barrett are medal contenders in high jump and Alysia Montano should contend in the 800m… If the women can get to 14 individual medals and maybe even tack on the 44 gold to go with their 4×1 world record there would be no way to argue this was the most talented track and field team ever assembled…

Of course the other major story line is whether or not Usain Bolt and the Jamaicans will beat the Americans in the 4×100… I think USA has the edge as long as they can get the baton around the track… The relay order will be Trell Kimmons, Justin Gatlin, Tyson Gay and Ryan Bailey… Interesting you give it to the rookie to finish!

Thanks so much for reading, tweeting, Facebooking and just showing general interest in track and field during the Olympics… I love carrying on the conversation and having big discussions…
